2016 Asian-Swiss Summer School Program Successfully Held


On July3-9, 2016 Asian-Swiss Summer School Program (ASSS) was successfully held in Renmin University of China. It was an academic exchange program initiated by Institut de Hautes Tudes en Administration (IDHEAP), and co-hosted by the School of Public Administration and Policy, RUC and the Department of Postgraduate, Chinese Academy of Governance. Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore and the School of Government, Sun Yat-Sen University also attended the program.

The themes of ASSS included“Globalization and Good Governance”, “Public Participation and Local Governance”, “Collaborative Governance”, and “Performance, Accountability and Transparency”. The program attracted 28 teachers and students coming from five institutes in Swiss, Singapore and China.

On the morning of July 4, ASSS was initiated in RUC, Beijing. The opening ceremony was hosted by Associate Professor Liu Wei from SPAP. Professor Xu Guangjian, Executive Deputy Dean of SPAP, and Zong Xiandong, Director of International Exchange Office, Chinese Academy of Governance, delivered welcome speeches. PhD candidate Huang Wenhao, master postgraduates Shen Hui, Wu Shan, Liu Fang and undergraduate Zhang Huansen from SPAP participated in the program. For the following six days, they and other 18 students communicated with and learned from Professor Oliver Glassey of IDHEAP, Associate Professor Song Xiongwei of the Department of Postgraduate, Chinese Academy of Governance, Researcher Seck Tan of Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore and Associate Researcher Yang Lijing of the School of Government, Sun Yat-Sen University.

The program consisted of academic exchange part and social practice part. During the academic exchange, all teachers and students made reportson the topics of “Globalization and Good Governance”, “Public Participation and Local Governance”, “Collaborative Governance”, and “Performance, Accountability and Transparency”. Associate Professor Liu Wei made a presentation on policy innovation and diffusion. Huang Wenhao, Shen Hui, Wu Shan, Liu Fang and Zhang Huansen made reports on the topics of “Housing Satisfaction of Migrant Workers”, “Collaborative Governance on Chronic Diseases”, “Urban-rural Integration and Garden City”, “International Comparison of Medical Insurance Governance”, “Citizen Participation in Anti-terrorist”. Their communication and discussion with teachers and students from other universities showed that they had strong academic ability and their communication skills had reached an international level.On the one hand, this part broadened the horizon and enhanced the comprehensive academic literacy; on the other one, it strengthened the exchanges between Swiss and the Asian countries and regions on public management reforms and studies.

In the social practice part, the teachers and students conducted a field study in Beijing 798 Art Zone, National Museum of China and Capital Museum etc. All the teachers and students said that the substantial field study deepened their relationship and enabled them to know more about China’s actual condition.

On the morning of July 8, 2016 ASSS came to a close. Professor Zhu Guoren, Executive Deputy Director of the Department of Postgraduate, Chinese Academy of Governance, Professor Cui Jun, Vice Chairman of SPAP, RUC, delivered speeches in the closing ceremony. They spoke highly of the program and the active teachers and students. The participants expected to get together to explore the theories and practices of public management in Lausanne, Swiss the next year.
